Another cross curricular lesson. Rube Goldberg made cartoon drawings of absurd, overly complicated machines. In our art class, we start by looking at examples of his hart. Then we start talking about the 6 simple machines discussed in 7th grade science.
1. Incline Plane
2. Wedge
3. Screw
4. Wheel and Axle
5. Pulley
6. Lever
Then students start to make preliminary drawings in their sketchbook. These are the requirements:
Must have 15 steps.
Must use all 6 simple machines.
Must accomplish a task.
Must have written directions.
Once they have a good design, they draw a final version on 6x 18 inch paper, and color.
After, we create a real Rube Goldberg machine from our still life objects, blocks, books, tape and the like. Check the video from previous years!
