I teach students about art, creativity, and visual problem solving at Carthage Junior High. My wife is also an art teacher, and my three kids are all into their own arts, music, drama, imaginary unicorn development!

Self Portraits and Proportion
Students started our observational drawing unit by creating a self-portrait, as a pre-test. I want to see how well they draw before we teach them how to draw.
Now students are learning about proportions of the face so that they can apply their new skills with this additional information. Here is the handout I use:

I explain the relationships as I demonstrate on the board with my own drawing.
Students at the same time try to create their own version of the example face using the handout.
After some practice, students can then apply the relationships to their own face
